We Polled Our Entire Office, and These 9 Date-Night Makeup Looks Won Us Over

There’s nothing better than a date night to inspire some serious makeup adventures. Whether you routinely step out on the weekends or will be dusting off your dancing shoes for the first time in a while, a fresh new face beat will take any activity on the schedule to the next level.

If you’re feeling less than inspired for the big night, don’t worry. We conducted a poll of all our editors and came up with nine universally adored date-night makeup looks you won’t be able to resist. From glitzy, dramatic eye makeup to fresh skin and perfectly glossy lips, the looks are absolutely to die for.

Whether you’re headed out for a night with your friends, gearing up for a date with a special someone, or just taking yourself out for a fancy solo dinner (amen to that!), check out the editor-approved celebrity makeup looks that are so beautiful you won’t want to wash your face at the end of the night. But please always wash your makeup off, friends.

Why we love it: A night out is the perfect excuse to ramp up your makeup and try something you normally wouldn’t. This glittering, blue motif is so sultry and definitely date-night appropriate.

Why we love it: “I don’t wear dramatic makeup, so I have trouble changing things up for a night out. A subtle swipe of fun eyeliner would be the perfect solution, and I can do it without having to amp up the rest of my makeup.” — Allyson Payer, senior fashion editor

Why we love it: “For date nights, I often wear winged eyeliner or a smoky eye, but I’ve never attempted this hybrid version, which feels particularly fresh. I especially love the focus on dewy, glowing skin and a neutral lip paired with the statement eye.” — Kristen Nichols, managing editor

Why we love it: “It took me a long time to move beyond neutrals and earth tones for my makeup, but now that I have, I’m so in love with all things berry. A look like this one would be an instant confidence booster for a night out.” — Courtney Higgs, associate beauty editor

Why we love it: “I think it’s always important to just be true to yourself when it comes to date makeup (obviously), but there is something so pretty and effortless about a shiny neutral or light-pink lip and glowing skin. But I love that the cat-eye adds something special without looking too dramatic or intense.” — Erin Jahns, beauty editor

Why we love it: “I love the look of smudged liner because it creates an effortlessly cool vibe that I’m always trying to achieve for date night. So I’d probably wear a slip dress and a leather jacket to accompany the look.” — Anna LaPlaca, associate fashion editor

Why we love it: “When I’m going on a first date, I like to play it cool (even though I am far from calm and collected), so I want to look put-together but not make it seem that I tried too hard. I also want to look like my normal self! I love this natural, unfussy look—the fresh, dewy skin and shiny lip with a hint of color would give me some extra confidence but still make me feel like myself.” — Sarah Yang, managing editor, THE/THIRTY

Why we love it: “I love that this look reads dramatic without being smoky. The neutral shadow really enhances her eyes in a way that feels more authentic than most going-out makeup looks.” — Lauren Eggertsen, senior fashion editor

Why we love it: This look earned a vote from nearly everyone we polled, and for good reason. From the smoldering, luminous eye makeup to the rose-colored pout, it’s a universal crowd-pleaser that’s sure to turn heads.

15 Top-Rated Setting Powders—Because, Yes, Our Faces Still Get Oily in Winter

As simple as setting powder may seem, it’s actually one of the trickiest makeup products to shop for. First, you have to determine if you want a loose or a pressed formula. (They’re virtually the same but work differently depending on the application tool you choose to use—sponges, poofs, and brushes yield different finishes and results.) Then comes the difficult adventure of finding a shade that won’t read ashy, orange, or pink, OR a formula that doesn’t cake, pill, or serve flashback during your selfies.

It can take some trial and error, but for the most part, we rely heavily on word of mouth and reviews when it comes to finding a tricky product like setting powder. What’s even more interesting is that there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference between the compacts and jars that break our weekly food budget and the options coming in at around $12 or so.

To find the best drugstore setting powder options out there right now, we scoured the reviews and best-selling formulas from affordable retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Ulta to serve you up some budget-friendly, shine-banishing relief. Keep scrolling!

Surprise! One of the most-wanted products on Amazon is this random loose setting powder from Coty. In fact, it’s SO popular (at just $6, no less) it’s gained a cult following within the industry. It delivers an airbrushed-esque long-lasting finish while also camouflaging the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles.

With about 1200 ratings and a solid four stars on Amazon, this (practically) invisible setting dust from NYX is a fan favorite. It’s made from 100% pure mineral silica, boasts an ultra-fine texture, and creates flattering matte finish thanks to the universally flattering and sheer shade.

As someone who actually uses this drugstore setting powder (I grabbed it in a pinch after running out of my favorite MAC formula), I can say Revlon’s top-rated iteration is pretty fantastic. As someone with pores that clog easily, I appreciate that it’s oil-free but still provides long, 16-hour-lasting coverage. It’s also lightweight so you don’t feel like you’re wearing a mask over your concealer or foundation.

Setting powders can be notoriously cringe-worthy when it comes to shade options, but this top-rated drugstore option from Maybelline is one of the more inclusive formulas in terms of shade range. It’s non-comedogenic, it controls shine for hours, and it scores an (almost) solid five-star rating with just under 4000 reviews on Amazon. So yes, the people have spoken and the people are impressed.

“I have been using this product for year, and I would never change to anything else for any reason!” shares one Amazon reviewer. “It’s great for skin (doesn’t make me break out), the translusant [sic] color works well in summer or fall months as the tone of my skin will change some, and it helps keep skin from getting that oily look for hours.”

One of our biggest gripes with setting powders is the fact that they can look, well, very unnatural. This oil-free blendable option is a best seller on Walmart and is designed to look one with your skin.

We already talked about CoverGirl’s amazing loose setting powder above, but if you prefer a pressed compact, the brand also makes this version, which, according to reviews, is just as impressive. It’s even equipped with skin-conditioning chamomile and light-reflecting pigments so your skin looks youthful and radiant.

Some setting powders are better worn alone and some work their magic atop our foundation or concealer. This drugstore option from L’Oréal is perfect for either occasion. It keeps aggressive grease at bay for up to 16 hours while offering feather-light, medium-matte coverage.

“This is the best powder,” declares one satisfied Walmart reviewer. “First of all, I can never believe how cheap it is. It gives such a nice natural, all-day look. I use it after my foundation to set it. It really lasts a long time since you do not need a lot. It comes with a pouf to apply, but I use a makeup brush instead.”

Another winner with an almost five-star rating? CoverGirl’s Professional Loose Finishing Powder. “I have tried so many brands of finishing powder, and I keep coming back to this one year after year,” says a reviewer named Charlotte. “Seriously, I’ve gone through dozens of pricey brands. For the price, you can not beat it!”

Boasting an affordable price tag (just $12) and a strategic shade lineup designed to be uniquely flattering and color-correcting depending on your skin tone, it’s no surprise Morphe’s Bake and Set Powder is one of the most applauded formulas at Ulta right now. For those looking for a loose setting powder with zero flash-back, this is a sure bet.

We haven’t met many loose setting powders with this many shade options, and we’re thrilled. According to the brand, this best seller from Ulta is great for prolonging the wear of your makeup and nixing oil and shine, while also brightening and balancing your skin tone.

Maybelline’s Fit Me pressed setting powder formula may reign supreme among Amazon shoppers, but its loose powder version comes in with a slightly higher rating on Ulta’s website (but just by a tad). In fact, one reviewer said it works better than the high-end setting powder she used to splurge on: “I switched to this powder due to the price, and I must say I am impressed! (I have combination skin with a super oily T-zone.) It sets extremely well without causing flashback—I don’t bake with a beauty blender, instead, I apply this with a flat brush. This is a great powder, and I definitely recommend! Will be buying again!”

This drugstore setting powder is only $6 and it also happens to be one of the only setting powders on Ulta’s website with a solid five-star rating. The brand calls the silky, lightweight formula “a jack of all trades” as it can be used to effortlessly set, mattify, absorb oil, or back. Plus, it’s great for delivering a blurring effect.

If you’re looking for a setting powder with natural ingredients that’s also 100% vegan and cruelty-free, you’ll love this pick from Pacifica. It’s hydrating and velvety so your skin won’t look cakey or parched, and it also features other skin-boosting perks like vitamin C, wild cherry bark extract, coconut water, and bamboo extract.  Up next: 16 Drugstore Foundations Makeup Artists and Beauty Editors Obsess Over

Quick Chicken Taquitos

Quick Chicken Taquitos - Such a great way to use up leftover rotisserie chicken! So easy, crispy and crunchy! Serve with guac, pico de gallo and sour cream!

Quick Chicken Taquitos - Such a great way to use up leftover rotisserie chicken! So easy, crispy and crunchy! Serve with guac, pico de gallo and sour cream!

I was really torn whether to classify this as an appetizer or entree.

I could (and I have) eaten most of the platter, alone, so that made it my dinner. But then I have also served this to some friends and family, which means I had to share so it unfortunately became an appetizer.

So I guess it’s both?

I don’t know. Either way, app or entree, these super crispy, crunchy taquitos comes together in a cinch with the help of leftover rotisserie along with a few pantry staples and my favorite blend of cheeses. Simply fill them up, roll them, and throw them in some hot, hot oil until super golden brown and crisp.

Serve with guacamole, pico de gallo and a dollop of sour cream. SO SO GOOD.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups leftover shredded rotisserie chicken
  • 1 (4-ounce) can diced green chilies
  • 4 ounces extra-sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 ounces Pepper Jack cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce, or more, to taste
  • 12 (6-inch) corn tortillas, warmed
  • 6 cups canola oil

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine chicken, green chiles, cheeses, cilantro, chili powder, cumin and hot sauce.
  2. Working one at a time, transfer tortilla to a work surface; place 1/3 cup chicken mixture in the center of each wrapper. Bring the bottom edge of the tortilla tightly over the filling, rolling from bottom to top until the top of the tortilla is reached; secure with wooden picks. Repeat with remaining tortilla and filling.
  3. Heat canola oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat until it reaches 375 degrees F.
  4. Working in batches, add taquitos to the Dutch oven and cook until evenly golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. When cool enough to handle, remove wooden picks.
  5. Serve immediately.

Report: Georgia Lands Wake Forest Grad Transfer QB Jamie Newman

Two days after starting QB Jake Fromm declared for the NFL draft, Wake Forest Jamie Newman will grad transfer to Georgia.

Georgia may have just found its next starting QB.

Just two days after 2019 starter Jake Fromm declared for the 2020 NFL draft, the school has reportedly added Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman, according to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach.

Newman, a 6’4” quarterback from Graham, NC, started 12 games for the Demon Deacons last season, completing nearly 61% of his pass attempts for 2,868 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2019. He also ran for 574 yards and six scores. He ranked second in the ACC in total offense with 286.8 yards per game and finish fifth in passing with 252.7 yards per game.

He decided on Georgia over Maryland, Miami, Oregon and Washington, according to Schlabach.

Newman should have a chance to start next season. The Bulldogs currently have former walk-on turned junior-college player turned scholarship quarterback Stetson Bennett on their team, but Bennett was the team’s backup last year.

Freshman D’Wan Mathis missed of all 2019 after a severe migraine triggered emergency surgery last May. He practiced with the team, but has not yet been cleared for contact, though he is expected to be cleared by next season. Four-star recruit, 2020 quarterback signee Carson Beck is also going to be part of the program next year, but the Jacksonville, Florida, native might need some additional grooming before being thrown into the SEC limelight.

After losing in the SEC Championship game to LSU, Georgia finished its 2019 season on a high note, beating Baylor in the Sugar Bowl.
